CARL Heeley believes Worcester City have plenty of reasons to be positive following the first two months of the season.

Despite drawing 2-2 at home to Harrogate Town on Saturday, City remain sixth in Blue Square Bet North and have a game in hand on Oxford City in the last play-off spot.

The Worcester manager knows his side have not always been at their best but he has been pleased with the way they have gleaned points without hitting top form.

“It’s still only one defeat in the first 10 games,” he said. “We could be picky at Oxford and Bradford (2-2 draws), the performance at Histon (0-0) and Saturday to a certain degree but we’ve got something from those four games when we’ve been under par. We can’t be too disheartened.

“Harrogate are a big, strong side and they went quite direct at times and it did cause us problems but overall I can’t be too picky.”

The manager was also quick to praise the impact of striker Danny Glover who responded to being left out of the starting XI with his side’s second goal.

The former Nuneaton Town striker replaced Michael Taylor with 27 minutes remaining and rose highest in the penalty area to head City2-1 in front from Ellis Deeney’s corner.

Although it didn’t prove to be the winner, Heeley was delighted at the attitude shown by his summer signing.

The Worcester boss said: “Danny’s a big player for us but players deserve their opportunity and to be fair to him he knows he hasn’t been quite at it.

“But I can’t do any more than leave him on the bench, put him on and he scores a goal, that’s the type of reaction I want. There was nothing more to it other than the competition for places.”

City’s strength in depth was further highlighted by left winger Danny Edwards and defender Shabir Khan not even making the squad at the weekend.

“Two players missed out of the squad so we have got options and competition for places,” Heeley added.
