WORCESTER City have their sights set on reaching the FA Cup fourth qualifying round for the first time in six years tomorrow.

The last time the St George’s Lane club reached that stage of the competition in 2006 Andy Preece was in charge and Dave Boddy was chairman.

But now they are 90 minutes away again as they head to Weston-super-Mare for a third qualifying round clash (3pm) carrying a prize pot of £7,500. Although both teams play at step two of the non-league pyramid — City in Conference North and Weston in the south — manager Carl Heeley fancies his team’s chances.

He said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to get into the fourth qualifying round when the clubs from the Blue Square Bet Premier come in.

“Then you are one game away from the first round proper and we want the players to experience a cup run and get the exposure.

“They are at the same level as us and there are no favourites, it’s a tough game for us but also for them because we are doing well. We believe in the quality we have got.”

City, who beat Gornal Athletic 4-0 in the previous round, are currently unbeaten in four league and cup matches and they won 1-0 at Solihull Moors last Tuesday, in which Tom Thorley scored his fourth goal of the season.

Weston, for whom former Worcester City striker Marc McGregor is assistant manager to Craig Laird, have won their last three matches, including 2-0 against Frome Town to book their place against City.

But Heeley is only focused on his own side, beaten just once all season, and he is pleased with the way they are progressing.

“After losing to Gainsborough we spoke about getting on a run again and now we have gone four unbeaten since then with three wins and a draw,” he said.

“I would have looked for a minimum of four points from the last two games and we have got them so everything is looking good for us.”

Jacob Rowe remains Worcester’s main injury doubt after suffering a groin strain against Solihull.

Heeley is hopeful of having the ex-Birmingham City central defender available but was impressed with replacement Lee Ayres.

However, keeper Glyn Thompson is expected to be back after a thigh strain.
