HOOKER Ben Sowrey says he understands the frustrations of supporters who watched Worcester Warriors’ last outing at Sixways.

The forward admitted Warriors “didn’t get it quite right” in their 22-15 defeat to Zebre this month in the European Challenge Cup.

Warriors’ loss confirmed their exit from the competition, leaving some supporters angry and frustrated with the result and display.

“It’s never nice to lose at home,” said the 24-year-old, who is in his second season at Warriors.

“It’s not good for the fans or for us. We didn’t get it quite right.

“Understandably, the fans were frustrated but we were a young side against a relatively experienced Zebre team who were no mugs.

“We need the fans to be on our side come Premiership time and we need to be all-guns blazing.

“I can see why the supporters were frustrated. It was just a case of us getting it wrong on the day.”

Leeds-born Sowrey has risen in the pecking order since Gus Creevy’s departure in the summer and made his Premiership debut at Bath in December.

“In terms of funding, there’s no comparison between the Premiership and Championship but it’s the same for us in terms of preparation and pressure,” said Sowrey.

“We pushed ourselves and drove our standards in the Championship — that’s been healthy coming into the Premiership.

“Niall Annett has had a great season and his leadership game has come on quite a bit.

“He’s taken to the hooker’s starting jersey pretty well and been excellent.”

Sowrey says he’s learning from his own experiences of having worn the jersey.

He said: “People might think it’s just throwing a ball to a bloke in the air but the reality is there are so many more variables, like the opposing lineout, weather conditions and the different throws.

“It’s something that has taken me a lot of practice to understand.

“We have a series of calls. Ultimately, the decision on who to throw to comes down to the lineout caller and he is normally the person wearing the number five jersey.”

Sowrey was a replacement in Warriors’ trip to La Rochelle last Friday and says the club are focused on Sunday’s big Premiership home clash with Exeter Chiefs (3pm).

“We are prepping for the Exeter game and that’s one we really want to win,” he said.

“The great thing is we are competing so well in the Premiership and close to converting close matches.

“Once we get it polished, we will be flying and I am sure we will put some Premiership wins together in the second half of the season.”
