TWO events are to be held in Worcester as part of the city's tribute to one of its First World War heroes.

The Rev. Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy, vicar of city centre church St Paul's in the Blockhouse, became famous as an Army chaplain, gaining the nickname Woodbine Willie for his habit of handing out Woodbine cigarettes to troops in the trenches.

Studdert-Kennedy also wrote poems about his experiences on the Western Front and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery during the Battle of Messines Ridge.

On Sunday, October 19, Worcester Civic Society is unveiling a blue plaque at St Paul's to commemorate its former parish priest. There will be a special morning service at 10.30am, followed by the unveiling ceremony at 12.00pm.

On Saturday, October 25 Searchlight Theatre Company will be visiting St Paul’s to perform a brand new play about Studdert-Kennedy called "Woodbine Willie - Poet and Padre". The play – which features poetry and music - had its premiere at this year's Edinburgh Festival and was very well received. David Robinson from the company said: "We are delighted to be able to kick off our national tour of the play at Studdert-Kennedy’s church." Tickets are £10, and £5 for under-18’s.
