A WORCESTERSHIRE soldier will be one of the 180 names read out in the Roll of Honour tomorrow.

George Henry Mason, of the second battalion in the Worcestershire Regiment, fought in the First World War in France and Belgium and will be commemorated for his sacrifice when the Roll of Honour is read out in London at dusk.

Heather Jones, of Droitwich, said: "George was my great uncle and I am extremely proud that his name is going to be read out.

"His sacrifice deserves recognition."

George, from Worcester, landed in France on August 12, 1914, and fought in many towns and cities across the country protecting them against the German army.

For a month, George and his battalion faced severe weather conditions, a lot of marching, sleep deprivation and German bombs against which they dug trenches to defend themselves.

On September 20, the regiment were fighting the Germans in a woodland area in France- it was here, along with many other officers and soldiers, George died aged 34.

His older brother, Samuel Mason, also fought in the war and survived- despite fighting for the full four years.

Tony Jones, Heather's husband, said: "Myself and my son have done some research into George and we were every excited by what we found.

"We will be going down to London tomorrow to watch the Roll of Honour being read out with real excitement and pride. George had certainly seen his fair share of fighting."

George first fought in Africa, in 1900 during the Boer War, with the Worcestershire Regiment. It was for his service in this war George was awarded the South Africa medal.

For his part in the First World War, George was awarded three medals.

In 1906, while on leave from India, George married a woman named Ellen in Worcester. He was also promoted to sergeant in this year.

It is believed George and Ellen went on to have children too.

The Roll of Honour is set to be read out at the Tower of London, starting from 8.40pm.

Tony and Heather Jones believe there are descendants of George's out there, and are asking them to get in touch.
