Checkmate to Kidderminster

KIDDERMINSTER Chess Club booked their place in the Worcester and District Knockout Cup final after edging Malvern.

A tight match was drawn 2-2 but Kidderminster progressed to the next stage against last season’s winners because of a superior board count.

They had struggled to get a side together because of illness and called in brothers James ,12, and Joseph Friar, 11, at the last minute.

Malvern fielded the county’s strongest player along with three other member of the county first team in what was tipped as a David versus Goliath clash.

However, Kidderminster stuck to their task to record a remarkable victory.

Worcestershire took on Staffordshire in the annual county match. Worcestershire fought back to come from behind to draw the match.

Ninety-year-old John Holmberg ensured the draw by winning the final game. There were also good performances from Kidderminster players James and Joseph Friar, as well as Terry Pountney.
