Plans for a block of student flats to be built in St John's have sparked fury among people living nearby.

Neighbours have said the proposed plans for 54 flats being built on Henwick Road on a church hall will bring extra noise, pollution and cars.

Charlotte Walker, who lives in Henwick Road, said: "I feel passionate and strong about the development and the impact it will have on the community.

"Some people are thinking it's good for the local economy but maybe they don't have a property that would be directly facing it.

"I used to be a student, I have nothing against students, but I'm thinking about the extra noise, extra pollution and extra cars.

"The plans have restricted parking and people will have cars and want to park them somewhere.

"It's just really sad.

"I'm sat looking at where it would be now. It would restrict lovely views of the Cathedral, the trees, St Clement's Church - we would lose the sense of space that we have.

"I've spoken to a lot of neighbours and no one wants it.

"We don't want it. We don't need it."

Linda Wilkes, of Nelson Road, added: "I am really against student accommodation being built right next to elderly people's housing.

"To build 54 rooms smack bang in the middle of elderly people's housing is ridiculous.

"Firstly, the noise will be horrendous, parking will be a nightmare.

"There is no more room in St Johns for this."

However, Albert Ballinger from Hawkwood Crescent believes the development to be positive for the community.

He said: "I have read today a lot of the complaints from local residents regarding this, saying that student accommodation attracts anti-social behaviour and noise.

"I have never experienced this, living next to private student housing, let alone a University Managed building.

"The University building these flats would have the opposite effect to what the objects say, there will be accountability, CCTV and the knowledge of all the residents.

"The area will be safer and better for it.

"But my main point is why are people so against investment in their own city?

"It baffles me that people can be so short-sighted, and strung up on the idea that just because people are young and drink that they are anti-social."

Worcester City Council has invited residents to view the plans at the Guildhall on Tuesday, July 12 at 11am.
