YOU may have heard of a deep-fried Mars Bar, or even ventured into battered cream egg territory, but have you ever thought about eating fried Christmas food?

Well, foodies might be surprised to hear about the battered Mars Bar's fried rival after Hooked in St John’s launched its Christmas menu.

Yep, you batter believe it.

"Customers have been asking about it all year round and wanting to know what we were doing this year," said Louka Nicodemou, who founded the business three years ago with his wife Lia.

"They love it - people have been going to tell their friends and trying it out of curiosity."

I have never been the adventurous type when it comes to trying unusual deep-fried food and I must admit I was stunned someone would want to batter a mince pie, let alone eat one.

Attentively, I watched as Mr Nicodemou dipped each item into the batter and patiently waited for them to be fried.

The first myth that was bust for me was how none of the food was greasy and, much to my surprise, tasted pretty good.

The mince pie tasted more like a sweet pudding which was rich in flavour and something I would purchase and eat again.

The best by far was the deep-fried brie that had a lovely gooey inside and then a crispy outside - my fellow reporters also snapped them up back in the office.

It came with cranberry sauce and the two together were a game changer.

I found the pigs in blankets were like your typical battered sausage but, of course, with its very own twist with the bacon.

If you're feeling adventurous and fancy some food that I would argue is better battered, then this new Christmas menu is for you.

My overall verdict? I'm Hooked!
