A Hollywood-style sign spelling out the word Malverns will be installed at the famous Worcestershire beauty spot.

The eight large white letters, measuring 45ft (14m) tall, will be anchored to the hills above Great Malvern in a bid to boost tourism.

On a clear day, the new landmark will be visible from miles around and those behind the idea hope it will bring thousands more visitors to the county.

Tourists will be able to pay to be driven to the foot of the letter M, where they will be offered souvenirs and the chance to have their photographs taken.

The sign will be made of steel, like the famous one in Hollywood, and the £200,000 cost will be funded with the help of a lottery grant.

The plan was given the thumbs-up by the Malvern branch of the Federation of Outdoor Landscapes at a meeting yesterday.

Members were told about the plan by Paolo di Farlys, an Italian artist who specialises in creating giant sculptures.

Afterwards, Mr di Farlys said: “This type of modern artwork has become increasingly popular in ever more bizarre places.

“The strangest location that’s ever been suggested was the surface of the moon.”

However, not everyone at the meeting was in favour of the sign, with opponents pointing out that the hills are designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.Edward Elliot, aged 51, from Malvern, said: “It will be totally out of keeping with the natural environment. I think it’s a silly idea.”

Last month, online bookmakers Paddy Power caused controversy when it turned its logo into a Hollywood-style sign at Cheltenham racecourse. The company has since announced plans to secure permanent planning permission for the sign.

Another sign spelling out Basildon was recently installed along a dual carriageway to welcome visitors to the Essex town.

Mr di Farlys hopes the sign will be completed by April 1 next year.
