SIR - I have never been a motorist but must say that various kinds of cameras are being used by the authorities to catch unwary drivers. The police seem to be obsessed with motorists in particular, while hooligans and vandals and professional criminals get away with criminal acts.

We also seem to favour the idea of charging people for entering city centres and even for entering urban areas at all. Of course, not all vehicles are private cars - what happens to commercial vehicles? Yet civilised living requires transport. Since the beginning of the 20th century we have relied increasingly on the internal combustion engine. Is the aim now to eventually scrap this means of locomotion, because it is believed to cause global warming?
