SIR - A couple of weeks ago, national "switch it off" week was staged. On October 17, the Worcester News printed a small sample of posters submitted by children to promote it. Some of the worst culprits are business firms. A company with a car park in Worcester has its lights automically switched on at dusk - last week 6.20pm. By this time, the staff cars have usually gone home, but the lights stay on until they automatically switch off at 9.30pm. The lights came on and go off again in the morning, usually before the first cars arrive and on Saturday and Sundays when there are no cars.

For the last two Christmas and new years, the offices have been closed for about 10 days. This is 10 days of lights coming on and going off with no one using the car park. If the firm opened its car park to residents at weekends, evenings and holidays some advantage may be gained for the area and its parking problems. I have no axe to grind - I made a positive decision to give up driving when I was 60 and now travel on my bike and by public transport.
