SIR - Whatever my experiences in the Second World War they were nothing by comparison with those of Sergeant Jack Wall and his generation.
Nevertheless, I knew my moments of fear and more than once experienced traumatic stress that caused me to behave irrationally and out of character.
Whatever the circumstances surrounding personnel shot at dawn by our own side, they had originally set out as brave volunteers to serve King and Country and it was unfair their families should have been subjected to shame and humiliation.
They, too, were casualties of war, and I see no justification for witholding names from war memorials or other forms of discrimination. Nothing can bring them back but at least the forthcoming ratification of the Amendment to the Armed Forces Bill will go some way to restoring dignity to those who still grieve. I applaud the efforts of Jill Turner to exonerate her uncle who had already proved himself a hero before the unfortunate incident leading to his court martial.
JOHN HINTON, Worcester.
