SIR - Bearing in mind the similarity of rhetoric emanating from Councillor David Candler and George Cowley, I wonder whether they are from the same New Labour party that is, unfortunately, in charge of this country, or some other quite obscure party that lives in their own minds.

David Candler's advice for people to use the Post offices is welcomed by we four million who signed the save our Post Offices petition. However, it is also astounding bearing in mind that it was their government that forcibly took away pension books and employed agencies to bully pensioners to accept the Post Office card account - a card account that MP Mike Foster declines to discuss in this paper. We have also seen the TV stamps, and car taxation facilities taken away. So - David Candler's advice must be to use your post offices before his government's actions close them. I really hope that people do take his advice and vote with their feet.

BRIAN HUNT, Worcester.
