SIR – Re the letter by George Cowley ‘Don’t waste money – walk for free instead’ (Worcester News, November 5).
I can understand his comments regarding the proposed £13 million new swimming pool at Perdiswell.
The benefits and cost savings of having a healthier population is without doubt and the proposed new sports facility at Perdiswell will only add to that Sansome pool has reached the end of its life and Perdiswell isn’t far behind, so something needs to be done.
The proposed joint site clearly has lots of benefits – and not just financial.
The misconception, though, is that the city council has £13 million in the bank and is deciding to spend it on the new centre – this is not the case.
The £13 million will have to come from grants, awards, Sansome land sale and loans.
The key, though, is that the new centre will generate £350,000 a year as opposed to the current set-up which costs the council £350,000 a year.
I accept the £700,000 savings will have to service the loans taken by the council, but in time the centre will pay for itself, the city will have sports facilities to be truly proud of and, moreover, once it is paid for the £700,000 a year can be put to good use.
