SIR – British beer drinkers already pay up to 10 times more tax on beer than other European countries.

We fork out an average of £177 a year compared with £15 in places such as Germany and Spain.

Since the ‘duty escalator’ was introduced in 2008, beer tax has soared 42 per cent in this country, far above the rise of inflation.

About 12 pubs a week close in Britain, (about 5,000 since the escalator was introduced) putting more people out of work.

People simply cannot afford to go out for a couple of pints like they used to.

It is forecast that the £6 pint will be upon us by 2014, which is obviously going to shut down more pubs and put more people on the dole queue.

The Government must review this policy, not only to protect jobs but also a British way of life.
