Sir – I wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer [George Osborne] asking him if he considered it fair on people like myself who have saved our money and bought private retirement flats.
We have to pay VAT on the maintenance charges, whereas had we spent all our money we would be kept by the State.
He didn’t even have the courtesy to reply but passed my letter to HM Revenue and Customs, who sidestepped the issue.
So I am fully in agreement with the letter by Carole Roberts ‘Government picking on the pensioners’ (Worcester News, November 7).
We pensioners have put a lot into this country by working most of our lives yet single mums and people who come into our country because it is a soft touch are looked after by the State (that’s us).
It seems a very unfair world at times.
