SIR – I’M delighted to see the progress of the new University of Worcester arena and I’ve got my fingers crossed that Worcester City Football Club will finally get a new stadium.

But I can’t but feel that there’s a missed opportunity here.

Surely it would have made sense to combine these schemes to create a Sports City – to bring together an indoor and outdoor arena that would serve as a centre of regional sporting excellence.

I know finding a location is always a bugbear but surely there was room on Hylton Road to expand to include a football stadium.

It’s close to town, any extra parking could be accommodated on Pitchcroft (raising revenue for the racecourse) and the right development, with an allweather pitch for instance, would create a facility to be used every day for students and the community as a whole.

I accept that could mean relocating businesses but there’s enough space not being utilised on other industrial areas.

Rather than dividing limited resources, doesn’t it make sense to develop some joined-up thinking, following on from the Olympics, to Inspire a Generation.
