SIR – Congratulations to the Worcester News for exposing the new police and crime commissioner’s plans to appoint a deputy at a cost of £50,000 a year (Worcester News, December 4).

This was not in the new commissioner’s election manifesto and neither have we had the opportunity to vote for the deputy he wishes to appoint.

The electoral commission really needs to look at this.

The £50,000 for this deputy with the salary of the commissioner will now add up to a combined salary of £125,000 a year.

The £75,000 would have been better spent on four or five police officers on the beat.

I thought the idea of a commissioner was to save money, not spend it like water.

After all, if this elderly gentleman of 74 feels he cannot cope doing the job of commissioner then he should resign and let someone else do it who can.
