SIR – John Phillpott (Worcester News, February 9) says that you can tell a superior soul from an ordinary person if they style themselves using initials rather than Christian names, and compounded such as LP Hartley and JK Rowling.

But I feel that times have changed. I get letters from total strangers (even HM Revenue and Customs) signed in the writer’s Christian name.

When I first worked in an office in the 1950s, only the office reference was shown, and the letter could only be signed by the manager or his deputy. Needless to say, any caller had difficulty in speaking to the originator of the letter. They call it “the good old days”.

PHIL PEGLER
