SIR – I wonder how many Worcester News readers have ever thought about being a politician or a public sector executive and enjoying all the benefits that goes with the job.

If they have they will have to learn one of the black arts of being a politician or public sector executive, namely the art of not answering a direct question but answering a question that hasn’t been asked instead.

We see this time and time again when either are interviewed on television.

Not many of the interviewers have the skills, time or temerity to press home the original question.

There are exceptions.

Jeremy Paxman’s interview of Michael Howard led to Paxman asking the same question 12 times, although Howard still did not give an answer.

Have readers also noticed that when some public wrong is uncovered the people concerned nearly always say that they have addressed the issue and taken steps to put it right.

Many times they have done nothing of the sort and just move on to the merry-goround of public sector executive jobs with an exit package of more than most people earn in a lifetime.
