SIR – Re the front page story about Councillor [Jabba] Riaz (Worcester News, June 29) and how he could not bury his auntie within the 24-hour period as required by Muslim tradition.

This delay was due to his difficulty in getting hold of a coroner.

Ifail to see how, even if a coroner could have been contacted, that Coun Riaz could have transported his auntie’s body back to Pakistan within 24 hours.

I agree that the problem about contacting a coroner should not happen.

There are other reasons that people may need to contact the coroner at weekends or out-of-hours so an ‘on call’ system should operate.

In unexplained deaths permission is needed from a coroner before the deceased can be moved to the mortuary.

I really only wanted to have my say about the comment made by Councillor [Allah] Ditta, who said: “In Pakistan this is never an issue, the body gets buried within 24 hours.”

Can I point out the obvious to Coun Ditta, we are living in the UK, not Pakistan.
