SIR – Worcestershire’s match at New Road against the Australians reminds me of an incident at Hastings in 1948 when the great Don Bradman reigned supreme.

In September, as was customary, the south of England were playing the tourists in a festival game.

At the season’s climax one would have thought that Bradman might have been less enthusiastic.

But when one of his players threw the ball in badly to the wicketkeeper – and after the ball became dead – he was made to re-throw it.
