SIR – I am writing to see if any of your readers have witnessed the same phenomenon as me.

In the early hours of Monday morning, around 4.30am, I was awoken by a loud rumbling noise in the ‘atmosphere’ that surrounded my house, which I cannot fathom.

The noise can only be described, in comparison, to the mixed sound of a road sweeper, roaring sea waves and howling wind through the trees.

My home is situated in a residential quiet cul-de-sac overlooking allotments and open countryside. A railway line runs behind the opposite houses and we are under a commercial flight path.

The noise was nothing like an airliner or a train.

And besides, the last commercial trains on that line cease at 12.10am and begin at 5.30am.

Also, I am fully aware of loud freight trains.

And as the weather has been so nice and the nights have been so clear, you can hear the distant rumbling of the M5 motorway.

This noise wasn’t distant; it was very close.

It was ‘above’ my house.

It sounded natural (like wind) yet manufactured (like a road sweeper).

My bedroom is at the rear of the property and away from the road. Can anyone shed light as to what I experienced?
