SIR – Councillor [Alan] Amos said (Worcester News, September 21) when talking about the proposed lap dancing club: “If adults want to pay for that kind of entertainment that’s up to them, it’s not for politicians to stop them, this is a democracy.”

He misses two vital points though: as long as that entertainment causes no damage to any one taking part; and, it is a long-standing democratic principle that those we elect to power should listen to those who put them there. I have not been privy to the advice the licensing committee received from the police – but I suspect they have more experience of these types of clubs than Coun Amos does.

I don’t believe the licensing committee should accept every piece of advice the police dole out, but to call the advice given regarding the club “extraordinarily ignorant” undermines the valuable service they provide in protecting people involved in an, at times, exploitative industry.

We should be able to voice our concerns about what is happening to our city.

Regardless of what he believes and irrespective of which ward we live in, he should not be calling the electorate stupid, bigots or hypocrites.

Does he believe, then, that we should keep shtum between elections?

Should we only hold beliefs that align with his? I hope not.

Members of the licensing committee and council officers are the only ones to have demonstrated stupidity.

They have had the last three years to ensure that the relevant measures under the Police and Crime Act 2009 were adopted. Why weren’t they? Perhaps Coun Amos could apply some of his acerbic wit to that matter, and the council should be telling us what measures they are putting in place to ensure that kind of mistake does not happen again.
