SIR – Do Ed Miliband and the Labour Party take the rest of us for fools (or at least for people with very short memories)?

As a minister in the last Labour government, Miliband introduced the Climate Change Act which his own government department estimated will cost us £18 billion every year until 2050.

Subsidies to build wind turbines and other forms of ‘renewable’ energy, plus the carbon tax are the main reason why our household bills are high.

Miliband is a hypocrite. If he was an honest politician he would own up to believing that high energy prices are necessary in order to protect the environment and take the flak for the lower living standards that we all face as a result of his actions.

Instead, he engages in populism and promises a 20- month price freeze.

Unfortunately the law of unintended consequences will kick in.

The gas and electric companies will raise prices before and after the freeze, as happened in California, and cut back on the investment needed to find new sources of supply.

So we will all end up paying even higher bills for Ed Miliband's election gimmick.
