Sir - GB Dipper questions why we give humanitarian money to countries much poorer than our own - WN letters 11/07/14.

Great progress is being made but according to the United Nations there are still over one billion people living in extreme hunger and poverty classified as less than $1.25 per day.

Yes, here in the UK, we have been going through a recession these last few years but our position simply can not be compared to the poorest countries of the world. Wars, climate change driven drought and hunger are key drivers to mass immigration. If we want to reduce net migration into the UK we need to show some solidarity and act on the causes of the inequalities and the desperation that causes these mass movements.

Credit where it is due, I commend the present government for giving 0.7% of our GDP to the very poorest countries. However the Green Party believe we should in fact increase this to 1% of GDP. This could easily be afforded with the introduction of a financial transaction tax on speculative trading in the City of London.
