Sir - Following your report on the tragic death of Duncan Jones: as he was senior club coach at Worcester Judo Club and I am head coach at Kidderminster's Samurai Judo Club, so our paths often crossed at competitions and training events.

Duncan was a true sportsman, generous in victory or defeat, following the judo maxim of "in skill opposed, in spirit united".

He was a fine coach and a superb role model for his young players in the way he lived and behaved.

He was also an excellent judo player, his most recent of many successes being winning silver at the British Masters Championships last year.

He was also a fine and very positive police officer. He will be sadly missed and our deepest sympathies go to his club and his family, who have suffered two sad losses in such a short time after Duncan's father Phil, who for many years led Worcester Judo Club and like Duncan put his heart and soul into the club, died not so long ago.

Andrew Haffner,

Head Coach, Samurai Judo Club (Kidderminster).
