SIR - I noted Sir Peter Luff’s comments on Douglas Carswell (Worcester News, 19th September) as mentioned in ‘The Source’. I’ll leave others to compare Mr Carswell to Enoch Powell.

Sir Peter has spent his entire political life trying to achieve a federal Europe. He is of course not going to sing the praises of a staunch opponent of that aim.

Mr Carswell has stood by his principles and watched as his party has drifted steadily to the vacuous political centre-ground, where the Tories are indistinguishable from their coalition partners and Labour.

If readers are interested in Mr Carswell’s political outlook, and not on the tabloid caricatures foisted on him in the wake of his defection, they are urged to read The Plan: Twelve Months to Renew Britain.

Written in 2008 with Daniel Hannan, it is a treatise on small government and amongst much else points out the benefits of putting more public services in the hands of local councils, and strengthening political accountability at the same level.

This is something we need, particularly after the recent shenanigans at the County Council, where the ruling Tories are trying to draw a not very discrete veil over their accounting procedures.

Welcome to UKIP Mr Carswell. Conviction politicians such as yourself will bring nothing but good to our party.
