UKIP's Richard Delingpole criticises the Green Party for promoting "meat free Mondays" in Brighton ("Which is the real 'party of the people'?", Worcester News, November 17th).

Surely, however, the Greens should be praised, rather than criticised, for trying to encourage a diet that is kinder to animals, better for the environment and more beneficial for human health.

Mr Delingpole's reaction is not surprising, however, given the attendance of UKIP leader Nigel Farage at the appallingly cruel "sport" of fox hunting and the support of their MEP Roger Helmer for the badger cull.

Also, in the European Parliament, six UKIP MEPs were amongst only 14 members who voted against an overwhelmingly supported measure to crack down on the illegal ivory trade.

Happily, most members of the public have more enlightened attitudes towards animals and the environment and, with or without Meat Free Mondays, more and more people are becoming vegan or vegetarian every year and many others are reducing their consumption of meat, fish, eggs and dairy.?

Worcestershire Vegans & Veggies exists to help people switch to a more humane diet and lifestyle and we can be contacted at info@worcsveg.org.uk, on 01562 700043 or via our website at www.worcsveg.org.uk
