Sir - I wished to travel by rail from Worcester to Bristol this evening 17th March.
I enquired at Foregate Street Station about the cost of a single ticket from Worcester to Shirehampton and was told £22.40. Considering this to be a bit expensive for a fairly short journey I asked the price to Bristol and then on to Shirehampton using two separate single tickets.
Resulting fare £14.90. (£12.90 single to Bristol plus a £2 single on to Shirehampton) A saving of £7.50 which FGW were quite happy to overcharge me without any explanation about alternative fares.
Given that FGW have had the franchise for many years and have probably repeated this dishonesty hundreds of thousands if not millions of times I would like to enquire as to how members of the public can claim refunds from FGW on deliberate overcharging.
I would advise all rail passengers to look for split ticket options.
If you don't ask, FGW won't tell you. It's probably in their training manual.
