SIR – The decision by First Bus to cut off hundreds of people by ending the bus route along Hollymount Road and Tunnel Hill, Troutbeck and Ambleside Drive is outrageous.

They are “revising” the 33 and 34 A and B routes. There has been no consultation with local people and no real notice of the change.

Not only is this one of the areas of the city where people rely more on public transport than most, it is also an area with the steepest hills. Aged, infirm and people with disabilities or young children will have to walk a long way before they can find a bus to get to work, school, city centre or hospital.

As local city councillors we have had countless calls of concern and urge First to reconsider its ill-thought out plans which will cause misery in the community.

Energy firms flouting laws

SIR – Well I have seen it all now!

Iain Conn, chief executive of Centrica British Gas, says we would have influence on price if we stayed in the EU. The audacity gall is absolutely unbelievable. Iain Conn should hang his head in shame.

The truth gas and electric prices have now come down about 50 per cent. British Gas and other energy companies have reduced prices by about 15 per cent. That means 35 per cent is being stolen from millions of people in the United Kingdom. No wonder they need foodbanks, with millions in poverty. British Gas must be making not millions but billions of pounds from this outrage and that’s out of your pockets citizens.

As I said in a previous letter the Great Train Robbers who did long prison sentences were pearly white angels compared with energy companies. They are making a mockery of the law of the land. The Conservative government who have always been tough on law and order must act fast to stop this outrage continuing.

Perhaps snob has secrets

SIR – With reference to John Phillpott’s article (April 2) regarding his wife’s friend who lives in Bath and was admonished by a neighbour for hanging out her washing in the back garden – apparently, this “not only lowered the tone of the area” but “also affected property prices” – can I suggest to Mrs Phillpott’s friend that she now installs an additional line in her front garden too? I most certainly would be doing this if it ever happened to me.

Incidentally, my mother always told me that one could ALWAYS tell a person by their washing. Obviously this ‘neighbour’ must have something to hide!

NUT killing off British values

SIR – Let’s not imagine for a moment that the NUT (National Union of Teachers) has any interest in the welfare and teaching of our children, particularly in light of one of their recent decisions, which is not to teach British values to our children in school, choosing ‘international values’ instead. Typically of the left-liberal bias of so many in the teaching professions, they appear happy to brush over those aspects of our country’s great history that made it so successful and prominent on the world stage, at the forefront of innovation, music, science, and the arts, and the shared roots of the British people whose forebears achieved so much, through a colourful and fascinating history. Why would any British parent, or parent of children from other countries, not want their children to better understand and assimilate in British cultural identity?

Let us hope that the government, whose first duty is supposed to be to the British people, do not bend to this liberal, one-world nonsense, so that our children at the very least, have a decent understanding of their own history, and the wonderful achievements and hardships of the generations that went before.

Since the three mainstream parties have each conspired to immerse Britain and her people ever deeper into the undemocratic, imposing, and hugely expensive EU experiment, all the time denying us many of the facts around it, or a voice in it, I must confess my hopes are not high!

Obama must stay out of EU

SIR – Barack Obama claims he has a right to speak out on the EU because of US national security.

Who runs this country? First we have Brussels and the EU and now we’ve got Obama telling us how we should vote on our future. The irony of it – not to mention the hypocrisy.

Does he ask us our opinion on US votes? Does he ask us when he sends US troops into conflicts? America would simply not tolerate the degree of control by a foreign power that Europe impose on us.

Keep your nose out, Mr Obama.

Shooters are thoughtless

SIR – Clay pigeon shooting is a pleasant pastime, no doubt!

But how insensitive is it to ‘fire away’ before noon on Easter Sunday?

Nice one chaps over on the Hook. Free country I suppose!
