SIR – I could hardly believe my eyes this morning when I saw an immature herring gull walk through an open door into an eating establishment in the city. It may well have been looking for a bagel and coffee, however it proves we still have a problem with gulls in the city.

To be fair it’s our fault really. Some inconsiderate people continue to discard half-eaten food and litter because there are no penalties enforced, the trade waste from shops is still inappropriately bagged-up, and we continue to construct buildings conducive to their breeding.

The painting of their eggs clearly hasn’t worked well enough but the council does not appear to have an alternative plan. Perhaps it is time to contact ‘Mr. McGregor’ and his shotgun?

Insight of older voters

SIR – In stating that the older generation have compromised youngster’s futures by voting to Leave the EU, Lib Dem Charles Tucker (Worcester News, July 1) is guilty of the sort of hyperbole that characterised the failed Remain referendum campaign.

Furthermore, his one-eyed assessment of the ‘misinformation of the out campaign’ beggars belief. I seem to remember something approaching Armageddon being prophesied by his side of the debate. World War III even had a mention. If there was a prize for overstatement, distortion and manipulation, the Remain side would have won it hands-down.

With regard to his comments on the general voting tendency of the over-60’s, he should take time to consider that this was the generation that overwhelmingly voted to remain in the then-EEC in 1975. So why then did many amongst this generation change their minds?

Perhaps they arrived at the conclusion that taking full control of one’s own political institutions and borders was fundamentally a healthy thing.

Perhaps they saw that handing over our country’s future to unaccountable technocrats and corrupt institutions did not bode well for the future and voted to spare their grandchildren from such a fate.

Perhaps many older people cast their votes in favour of an EU exit precisely because they had the best interests of the younger generations at heart. After all, the latter do not benefit from a lifetime’s worth of knowledge and experience.

Shame on Tony Blair

SIR – Between 2005-2009, I spent several hours on most Saturdays standing outside the Guildhall, often dressed as Tony Blair.

What did I, my friends and the hundreds of people who signed the petitions achieve? Perhaps we helped to deter the government from taking us into war with Iran? I am certain that we helped to convince people that a huge crime had been committed in our name.

Hundreds of soldiers and thousands of civilians were killed in the illegal war, yet despite this horrible reality, and despite the conclusions of the Chilcot Report, Tony Blair and others still defend what happened. Shame on them.

Neil Laurenson Worcester Anger over immigration SIR – There are two sides to immigration. Those who come here to work, contribute and integrate and those EU immigrants who descended on the local homeless hostels to have their every need catered for, with tax payers still footing the bill for them. The cost of NHS treatment for their alcohol and drug additions is no doubt substantial again and tax payer funded. Some people wonder why there is such public anger over uncontrolled immigration. This is one reason.

Big thank you to hospital

SIR – As a recent patient at our hospital I think they deserve some praise. I went into hospital in April of last year for a major operation which meant having a colostomy bag fitted. This was a great shock but due to the Stoma Care Staff and all their wonderful backing I was well assured all would be fine, and they were right.

In June of this year I was back in hospital for a second operation and was looked after to a high standard. My thanks goes to Mr Pandy the surgeon and his team, the theatre technical staff and the theatre runners, also not forgetting the recovery staff for making sure that I was fine on my return to the HD Unit. I was soon moved to Beech B Ward for my recovery to return home, and the treatment I received from them was superb. Finally I must mention that the food was very good, also a big thank you to the cleaning staff as I can say that they met all the standards of which the hospital is expected of. So a very big thanks again to our wonderful Worcester Royal Hospital.

Unchartered waters

SIR – I believe that nearly all politicians (Tory, Labour, UKIP) mean well. But we are in unchartered waters. I’m very excited.
