Sir – The Green Party is urging the Government to resist Chinese “intimidation” over Hinkley Point nuclear power plant. At the end of July the Government said it needed more time to consider the deal with French firm EDF for the plant, in which China has a one-third stake.

The Government must resist this intimidation and do what is right for our national and energy security. Sharing our nuclear secrets with an undemocratic and secretive country that does not respect human rights is clearly not in the interests of our security.

Much has been made of sovereignty and patriotism in recent months. How can the Tories possibly consider that giving away sovereignty over our energy supply is taking back control?

The Green Party is clear that the future of energy must lie with rapid investment in both energy conservation measures and new renewable capacity. This offers a clean safe energy future and would also create thousands of jobs.
