SIR, It is good to read that Councils across Worcestershire are creating “profits” from parking charges (Worcester News December 10, page 5). Could charges be increased substantially, to reduce use of motor vehicles especially in the city and towns and provide enough money to prevent the loss of “cleaner and greener” workers’ jobs (Worcester News December 10, page 8)? These are the people who keep our city and towns in a state of civilized cleanliness and greenery whereas use of motor vehicles spreads dirt and destruction.
The excessive use of, and provision for, motor vehicles has devastated the City as far back as the destruction of the cathedral Lychgate in the 1930s and many fine buildings and homes since as well as causing death and ill-health from “accidents” and air pollution.
Walking, cycling and use of public transport cause less danger and are healthier, more sociable, far less harmful to our environment and involve lower cost to public funds than ever-greater use of motor cars with provision of more and more roadway and parking spaces as well as medical care for “victims” especially, but not only, children and the elderly.

Powick
