SIR - Would D E Margrett care to explain exactly how ID cards can and would be a valuable aid in the fight against anti-social elements' (Letters, Worcester News, June 29)?
The problem with criminals and other anti-social people is not in identifying them once caught, but rather with catching them in the first place. This requires more police officers on the streets, not a worthless but costly bit of plastic.
Moreover, while D E Margrett might think that there is nothing to fear in having his or her sensitive identity data recorded on a massive Government database, those of us who know that such databases are not secure are very concerned because this will create a perfect opportunity for identity fraudsters to obtain and exploit other people's details. In practice, ID cards are not about fighting crime - they are about a Government that wants a way of monitoring and controlling UK citizens.
BRIAN GLADMAN, Worcester.
