People should see animals suffering

SIR – I despair when I read letters defending medical experiments on animals. I can only assume such people are without compassion and/or ignorant of the appalling suffering of millions of sentient beings each year.

Using animals is akin to using babies. They are just as helpless and depend on those around them not to abuse them. I’m convinced if the public was to actually see the suffering involved, from birth to death of animals within the research laboratory (of course no government will permit this!) this vile industry would cease over night.

I want to see high welfare standards for animals in laboratories, but I can't agree with Mrs Brown that animal based research should be banned.

Fifty years ago a baby with meningitus would have died. Today babies who get prompt treatment will survive. Fifty years ago babies with cystic fibrosis would die at birth. Today they will live for several decades.

We should not let these children die. We need to keep new medical treatments coming. Let's keep animal research legal.

There is simply no scientific basis to experiment on other species for human medical research.

We know that not only is each and every species different at the cellular and molecular level but also that tiny, tiny genetic variations between individuals of the SAME species make ALL the difference.

This is why we must stop squandering medical-research resouces on studying other species and put them instead into scientific, human-relevant research and personalised medicines/treatments
