SIR – With massive cutbacks and an administration that is financially totally inept at the Guildhall, isn’t it time that we got rid of this expensive, useless organisation.

We obviously don’t need and can’t afford a city council. They don’t do much and they are now preparing to do even less.

A worrying issue was that among the cutbacks was a reduction in cabinet members. At the moment all decisions are made by only six members of the council – the Tory members of the cabinet – now there will be even fewer elected members so even a vague feeling of democracy will vanish.

I assume that with a 20 per cent cut in service I will see a 20 per cent reduction in my council tax.
