SIR – With the county council trying to save £55 million. Here’s a few suggestions. Amalgamate all the councils and stop duplicating services. Reduce the over-inflated salaries of the people at the top of the tree because they take out far more than their share. Get rid of two-thirds of councillors, because most of them are just fodder for useless meetings. For the councillors who are left, stop employing consultants for the simplest of questions.

As for the libraries, they can find plenty of good books from the charity shops to fill their shelves. By following these few suggestions there’s no need for anyone to be on the dole. If money was taken from the greedy lot at the top, the council could employ more youngsters who are now on the dole.
