SIR – As the wife of a hard working Worcester police officer I felt I must reply to Joyce Rose’s ill thought out comments (Letters December 15) on the subject of fewer “bobbies on the beat”.

Joyce, like you, I pay that large, same community charge but I am fortunate enough to have an insight into the work our local bobbies are doing.

Joyce ask yourself these questions: 1. Who is dealing with the vast number of criminals let out early from our prisons because they are full?

2.Who is sifting through complex computer systems to see if a suspected peodophile is possessing indecent images of children?

3. Who has helped to foil 19 terrorist attacks on this country?

4.Who is dealing with the 4,000 or so prisoners that pass through Worcester custody each year?

5.Who is making sense of DNA results, dealing with eBay disputes, Facebook rows and harassment via text messages – the 60s bobby on the beat? Somehow I doubt it!

Maybe Joyce, you’d be happier if the police turned up to incidents on BSA Bantams?!

I for one am glad my husband and his colleagues are serving us as best they can, forget the knocks, folks, and keep up the good work.

Merry Christmas to all Worcester’s police officers.

Claire Waring,
Worcester.
