Let’s be clear: the hunting ban stays

SIR – Full marks to Louise Robertson of League Against Cruel Sports for speaking out against the irresponsible behaviour of Worcestershire Hunt staff.

The crude attempt to round up a dozen foxhounds, running amok through front gardens after a fox, does not excuse the havoc which should have been prevented.

If hounds starting to chase a passing fox were immediately called off, Droitwich residents would have been spared such a dangerous situation. As one of them pointed out, allowing hounds to chase a fox is illegal, and as Louise Robertson points out, hounds worrying a fox to death can be very distressing for people to have to witness – not to mention the danger to young children, pets or road users if the hounds had run on the street.

Where was the ‘trail’ laid and what does David Parker mean by ‘exercise?’ There have been too many reports of suspect hunt activity for the excuses of ‘accidental’ fox hunting to be acceptable.

The Hunting Act is not “absurd” when it has been upheld by the European Court of High Rights, 80 and more individuals have been convicted under it and 75 per cent of the population, including 62 per cent of Conservative voters, support it. Hopefully voters at the general election will make it clear that they expect the ban on live animal hunting to remain in force.

Katherine Watson are you really that niave, worrying a Fox to death, that's a new one, I guess you have evidence of this fact, Not, How would you suggest that they exercise a pack of Hounds, put them all on leads and walk down the street with them. The Hunting Act was not upheld in European Courts it's the case for Human Rights that got turned down. Why do all you lot spout such lies, is it because you have some other hang up about Hunting, the most humane way of Fox control, all other methods do not offer the same kill or get away without harm, every other way can be far worse.

I'm with Katherine and Louise. If the hunts can't control the hounds, they should be muzzled. If they can control them, then there are no such things as 'accidental' kills. There is clear evidence across the country that the hunts have been creating artificial earths to encourage the breeding of foxes. In fact, if you read the Hansard debates, they state this openly again and again. You can't breed these poor animals and then pretend you are providing a service by killing them. Drag hunting is legal. Muzzle your hounds and try drag hunting for fun. We are no longer barbarians.

I'm with Katharine, Louise and M.Hayworth, if these dogs are out of control they should be on leashes and they should be muzzled, bad enough that they tear wild animals to bits in the name of sport for humans but when they are loose to attack domestic animals or children then this demonstrates the lack of supervision by the hunt and illustrates why so many "accidents" happen.
