Halal killing is cruel

SIR – So, the Australian RSPCA sued ITV for killing a rat by cutting its head off, taking it one-and-a-half minutes to die in I’m A Celebrity. Is no one bothered about the thousands of cattle that are killed in this country for halal meat? This barbaric way of killing animals by cutting their throats takes them more than two-and-a-half minutes to die an agonising death. This is going on every day now.

In most western countries, animals must be stunned before they are slaughtered in this way. Recent research has shown that as long as this is done then the slaughtered animals do not feel any pain.

Mr Jenkins, if you are aloud that is, may I suggest you have a good look at at the way Halal slaughter of animal's takes place in ether Jewish or Muslims slaughter practises. Then perhaps instead of sitting on the side and stating the obvious. You may just change your mind.

Over 90 per cent of animals slaughtered for halal meat in the UK are already stunned before slaughter. I certainly agree that the ones that aren't stunned suffer unnecessarily, which I do not condone, and this practice should be stopped.

You have the answer baldegale from Mr Jenkins although his answer in respect of the amount the RSPA has put forward is more in line with well under the 90% that his put forward .So if I may ask just one question on this vile and filthy trade in animal slaughter .Where do all the Animal Rights and the rest of the band waggon brigade who wish to abolish fox hunting stand .No where in sight is my belief.

I did some looking into this, as I was concerned about how Halal slaughter fitted with the legislation governing animal slaughter/prevention of cruelty.

Apparently for slaughter to be properly Halal, the animal must be alive when its throat is cut and the definition of 'alive' is quite specific, in that not only must it be living, breathing etc. it can't be stunned, poisoned or sedated to the point where it would never wake up - i.e. effectively dead.

However, I did find that someone had developed a way of stunning the animals so that they were insensible, but if left for a while (and not having had their throat cut), they would recover with no ill effects. This was deemed acceptable in a Halal context and a prevention of cruelty context.

How far this has been adopted, I don't know, and wouldn't comment without any evidence - but I would imagine that any abbatoir not employing it would be likely to run foul of current legislation? I also, being somewhat cynical, feel that this is an issue that gets trotted out every now and then as a bit of a sensationalist dig at muslims, when the reality of the slaughtering is probably that it is done in a humane way in the majority of cases. After all, why would anyone purposefully break the law or inflict unnecessary cruelty when humane alternatives are available?

Cromwell, can one assume from your dig at those who actively campaign against fox hunting that you are equally, if not more active in your campaign against halal slaughter -you know, holding meetings, lobbying MPs, raising funds, protesting at sites where it takes place, confronting those who do it. Or is your action limited to a few comments on this web site?
