SIR - May I correct a statement in the article headlined "Council demands answers over pay" in last Friday's Worcester News.

The article states incorrectly that the county council has only 31 posts with £50,000 plus salaries.

The annual accounts show quite clearly that there were 82 county council employees being paid more than £50,000 a year at March 31 2005, compared with 38 two years previously.

When questioned about the apparent discrepancy, the county council replied that "the two figures have been calculated differently for different purposes.

The figure of 31 represents the current number of employees with a salary in excess of £50,000. This number excluded schools/teachers salary related posts.

The figure of 82 includes all employees (including schools/teachers salary related posts) whose total remuneration is in excess of £50,000 pa".

I hope some of your readers can follow the county council's tortuous logic. Even if they can, I don't advise them to use the same logic to secure a reduction in their council tax. The county council would not hesitate to do them for fraud.
