SIR - I fully concur with the chief constable of West Mercia police, Paul West, and the new Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Ian Imray, who both show concerns over the suggested merger of our local force with several other Midlands forces.

Having served in the Worcester city police for the first half of my service, I know that smaller local units are generally more efficient.

Older readers will remember prior to 1967 when we were amalgamated, large city bobbies marching in a long line along High Street to disperse on The Cross, showing any likely wrongdoer what they were up against!

Naturally, serving locally we knew every likely lag and believe me they knew us!

Imagine my distress when 40 years ago I heard that we were to lose our identity and join up with three county police forces. With a heavy heart I donned a new uniform but remained in the city and surrounding area, but I began to realise that West Mercia police was turning into a force second to none, although I remained loyal to my city roots.

To enlarge even further will do little to deter criminals and I am sure the rural counties that West Mercia police serve will be further denuded of their officers.

Any old copper could tell politicians what is really needed, more severe sentences, zero options to deal with petty offences, police forces reading from the same song sheet and criminals dancing more often and longer to the jailhouse rock!

Long live West Mercia!

JOE WALTER,

Worcester.
