SIR - We read a lot about town and city redevelopment with internet shopping and are told that in a few decades, our high streets could be turned into flats and our out-of-town stores to distribution centres.

However, many people like to browse and examine goods. We need our shops and restaurants and indoor and outdoor retail markets.

Market traders work hard, long hours. Usually, where there is a market operating, it creates characters, helps the town to thrive, and is a vibrant force for the good, bringing people in and generating trade in general.
