SIR – Bob Jenkins (Letters, April 30) asks politicians “to stop treating us like idiots”’, but I have some sneaking sympathy for our politicians in modern Britain.

They know very well that British politicians have very little positive influence over ‘our’ economy, or immigration, or whether we go to war. Politics and economics is now global.

Our politicians can’t admit that sad fact, though. If they did, we would never elect them – or so they fear.
