SIR – Just as my family and I sat down for our Sunday dinner my husband happened to remark that he was looking forward to his Worcestershire meal.
I did not quite understand what he meant initially, but after a few seconds I realised what he was getting at – everything on our plates was grown locally.
The lamb came from Holt Heath, asparagus from Little Witley, cauliflower from Stourport, potatoes from Hartlebury and mint from my own garden.
I don’t profess to being the world’s greatest cook but I do believe that food sourced locally enhances my culinary skills and makes cooking considerably easier.
One farm shop I visit even provides a price comparison with the supermarkets on some of its products, not only are they cheaper but the flavours are so much better because they are picked fresh on the day.
I cannot believe that Tesco is importing asparagus from Peru to sell to customers – and that they actually buy it! Why are they not supporting British farmers and growers at a time when they should be supporting the economy here? As for flying food thousands of air miles, it is absolutely crazy. You do not have to travel far to find a local butcher, a local bakery or farm shop in this county to have delicious food and value for money. Bring back the Worcester News Buy Local campaign.
