Culture and belief is not always right

SIR – Jon Burgess (Letters, June 29) uses the excuse for eating cows, pigs and sheep that it is our “culture and belief” (it certainly isn’t mine!).

It was once our “culture and belief” to flog children for minor misdemeanours, flock to bear-baiting and cock-fighting events and publicly hang thieves.

Was this right because it was “part of our culture and belief”? Eating animals, even those slaughtered using “sound animal welfare” processes (the mind boggles) causes unimagined problems ecologically, economically, environmentally and spiritually – he’ll only find out by studying the subjects in some depth – the same applies to anyone who criticises a subject, of course.

Mr Burgess appears to prefer to eat his bacon sandwich with his head in the sand.

I, too, enjoy a bacon sandwich, even if it’s hard to find a veggie one when out. Naturally, a certain amount of sacrifice is involved, as it is with anything one does for altruistic type reasons.

I appreciate that probably one should not ram one’s ideas and preferences down others’ throats.

However, if Mr Burgess went to a country in which, say, child prostitution or wife beating was practised, would he accept it in silence or might he try to exert a little influence and education?

This record is getting a little overplayed now, don't you think?

For over 10 years Jon Burgess has been writing to newspapers with his brand of support for how farm animals are treated. Mr Vaughan-Spencers letter, in the last paragraph, makes a very good point countering Jon Burgesses most recent letter.

A pity that it was lost on Tulstar who, if he cannot add to a debate, should refrain from comment

I agree with Mr. Vaughan-Spencer’s letter. British people have used the “tradition, belief and culture” excuse for so long now – it’s dated. Kind of like culling animals because of over-population. I eat meat and enjoy it. But I do hope that the animals I eat have a fair and good life. If you want to become a veggie then it’s up to you. My wife doesn’t like red meats but she’ll eat fish and chicken. This is her choice as she doesn’t’ like the fatty taste of pork, beef or lamb. Yet I love it all because I like the taste.

It’s a shame about Tulstar. We do kind of have the same belief. But he chooses to disregard other peoples opinions with the same old “this is getting a little boring now” phrase. If you’ve got something to say, then say it. Don’t belittle people by silly comments just because you can’t think of anything to say yourself. A bit sad really…

Simon Vaughan-Spencer:
.
I too, agree with your right to say what you want.
.
But then you say to Mr Burgess, if he went to another country, who had wife beating, child prostitution, would he say nothing, or do something about it.
.
Well can I make a suggestion to you?
go to Iran, and try to stop, stoning women, before you can blink an eye, you will be in prison for a few years, and no you won't be given meat to eat.
