Here’s why I am not apologising

SIR – Don’t expect me to apologise to any of the farmers I have had to deal with, Mr Burgess.

Why should I apologise to the farmer who left a sheep which had a deformity in its legs get foot rot so bad that it couldn’t stand so couldn’t get food or water for days; or the farmer who left a sick sheep to die in the mud one cold winter day; or the farmer who left a dog locked up in a filthy dark shed with an infected leg with little food or water.

The list is endless. All these cases were either reported to Defra or the RSPCA. The lame sheep was reported by no less than three people.

The farmers involved still continue to abuse their animals.

Eventually, when there are no farm animals in a vegan world, the Government won’t need to spend vast sums of money to cull badgers just to please the dairy industry. We might then be able to enjoy our British wildlife.

Where are all these veggies and aliens from Vega coming from?

WN is getting inundated postings from militant veggies and is getting tiresome.

Can we have a different subject please?

"Eventually, when there are no farm animals in a vegan world, the Government won’t need to spend vast sums of money to cull badgers just to please the dairy industry. I wonder how many veggie websites have now got links to this site.
I certainly seems the Jon Burgess has stirred up a hornets nest for daring to suggest that he should be allowed to eat whet he chooses to eat not what someone else thinks he should eat.
Remember, the great majority of people in this country like John are meat eaters so it would appear that this sudden influx of letters is being orchestrated somewhere.

It is not true to say that Jon Burgess's point is that he should be allowed to eat what he likes. The way that farm animals are treated is the topic. Jon denies that animals are mistreated. Jon Burgess has a long history of denial that sentient creatures feel pain asserting that, for example, fox numbers are best controlled by setting a pack of hounds on them and ripping them apart. Any person who thinks such thoughts is unlikely to be a good judge of how
farmers treat their animals.

And standing up against cruel and barbaric behaviour is nothing to do with vegetarianism or veganism. Certainly no one is 'orchestrating' me.

Two points Id like to make. 1 Wasn't it nob heads who released Minks into the wild ,they in turn eventually slaughtering locale wild life .2 Halal meat any comments !!! I just thought as a bacon sarnie, steak and chips and roast beef typ of chap who doesn't give a toss regarding Veggies or the other type what they eat .by the by do they still wear leather or walk barefooted.Just thought I ask.

I do not eat animals so I have no interest in killing them. Kosher and Muslim slaughter is misguided. (involving hanging upside down and slitting the creatures throat, with no stunning). I wear shoes in Corfam which is all man made material. I have never released into the wild any mink or such. A mink 'farm' in Staffordshire had most of its 'stock' liberated but most of the animals did not go far, prefering to wait for their food from the 'farmer'. As I have said already (above) it is about farm animal cruelty, not vegetarianism or veganism or wanting people to alter their diet.

I have not seen any poster including Mr Burgess, suggest that no farmers mistreat their animals. There will always be some, just as some parents mistreat their children or dog owners their dogs. However to take the crimes of a minority and tar all farmers with the same brush, implying that the practice is widespread is nonsense. As Mr Burgess stated if you have evidence stop banging on about and instead take it to relevant authorities and get those responsible rightfully prosecuted.

Modern farming is not natural (chickens in cages, carves kept in the dark to whiten the flesh, cows producing milk for longer than nature intends, inappropriate but cheap food, and removing from the mother her offspring to early) to specify just a few methods. These stress animals a causes multiple cancers which are left often for human consumption, on the carcass. In many slaughterhouses brutality is endemic - slaughterman become hardened with their job and become less caring of the creatures welbeing. Look up the websites for yourselves. Evidence abounds. It's just that meateaters do not want to find it!

10 years in farming in Shropshire (1955-1965) showed me that farmers care deeply about their animals and cruelty was not tolerated, let alone carried out!

The French and Germans are far more cruel to their livestock, than the English.

Slaughterhouses are a different matter entirely.

I can't even talk about Halal - it upsets me too much.

Assuming that there are some sane folks in Fernhill Heath - they must be wringing their hands in despair as their vocal neighbours lower the value and desirability of the area..

to Olga,
And we will not be the first to call you "narrow minded" will we? (a recent letter to WN about you)
You do not know us so how do you justify such rudeness?
Traducing us lowers you in the eyes of all good people.

Unable to constructivly add to the debate but abusing my brother and I (not for the first time) Olga can only make her mark with cheap and childish insults. Empty headed but in print. Insults which are directed to all that have something worthwhile to say because Olga has a problem.

To Dereck and Hymie.
Reading my previous post I accept that it may be over the top and can understand you being offended. For this I publicly apologise.
.
I still disagree with your sentiments of animal cruelty, I visit many farms and although I don't like intensive, I have not seen evidence of CRUELTY. I've seen cases of animals not being kept in conditions that I would want to live but then I don't think we should consider this in human terms. They are animals.
I understand and respect many of vegetarian standing, personally I think veganism is a bit of a nonsense, from where I am sitting I feel the level of energy many vegans put into promoting Vegan principles this would be better directed at improving animal welfare conditions. Well cared for dairy cattle in good grass keep are hardly exploited, more like paying their own board and keep.
Dereck, I will correct one of your earlier posts on this subject. The original subject is about changing diets - just look again at the last paragraph and also Hymies first post reply.
.
Anyway, having apologised to you both, normal service will be resumed - I'd be interested to see the letter describing me as "narrow minded" though

Thanks Hymie - I'm still laughing - as an ex-golfer myself I have plenty of friends and family who still play There is only one accountant amonst them, they all take it so seriously it's great fun taking the mick - still if my 14 year old nephew makes it onto the professional circuit as is his intention (not quite scratch but close) I'll be so proud of him I'll have to find another group to have a laugh with - perhaps the "Narrow-Minded" or even "Vegan Baiting" could be a new hobby!
Thanks again.
