It’s the vegans who are the problem

SIR – C D Greenhall (Letters July 2) suggests we should stop all livestock rearing because a tiny minority of farmers might fail to meet our exacting farm animal welfare regulations.

If this train of thought continues, the next logical step has to be banning family pets because one or two owners happen to mistreat their dogs and cats. This has already been suggested by some in the animal rights movement.

It is beyond doubt the United Kingdom has the best farm animal welfare in the world. It is monitored by government, vets and independent organisations such as the RSPCA. Our livestock and dairy farmers do a fantastic job so the vast majority of people in this country can enjoy eating healthy well-reared meat.

The only problem is a tiny number of vegans determined to force feed the rest of us with their own very personal lifestyle choice.

Jon Burgess I have looked again at Mr Greenhalls letter to which you refer above. It untrue to suggest, as you do, that he said we should stop all animal livestock rearing.

Mr Greenhall only supplied you with evidence of farm animal cruelty which you had asked for, nothing else.

Why try and bolster your very weak case with misinformation and untruths? Farm animals are treated unnaturally on the majority of farms and you know it. Any person who supports the unlawfull hunting of foxes with hounds, as you do, with the end objective of ripping the fox to bits can hardly expect the public to trust him as a spokesman for good farming practice.

1) - "Farm animals are treated unnaturally on the majority of farms..." - that's simply not true...and you know it, Hymie!

2) - Foxes are killed immediately on capture and are well dead before "being ripped to bits" - such emotive and colourful language!

3) - The RSPCA is not terribly good at "monitoring farm welfare", Jon - but then, neither is DEFRA any good - (at anything much!) - farmer's conscience is at the root of both kindness and cruelty.

4) - If us meat-eaters are thought to be animals for doing so, the saying is "we are, what we eat" - so what does that make vegans?

When I said foxes ripped apart, I did mean ripped appart still alive. Hounds are well out in front in a chase and by the time the huntsman could get to the fox the dogs had almost certainly killed their prey.

Again when I said that farm animals where treated unnaturally on the majority of farms I was saying it as it is. Cows standing in their own exceta in stalls in barns 24 hours a day for
months on end during winter is not natural is it? Fed 'enriched' meal containing meat by-products is not natural for a creature whose species is by nature vegeterian. Keeping chickens in cages their entire lives unable to turn freely or in overcrowded broiler houses is not natural is it? I could go on but you have a different perception of unnatural rearing to the norm.

CSs point number 4 asks 'if we are what we eat what does that make vegans?'

An air of moral superiority seems to be manifesting itself from the vegan camp.

I answered an open question honestly as I see it. Vegans also have compassion.
Ever heard a cow who has had her calf taken from her?
Ever seen chickens pecking each other due to the stress of overcrowding? (next time you eat chicken remember there is a good possibility of infected wounds in your chicken meal. Ever see a chicken released from a battery cage trying to stand?

One good resultiing from Mr Jon Burgess's letter writing is that people can learn the truth of what goes on in farm units - not seen on "Open Farm
Sundays," when debate on his views follows.

You again seem to suggest that you are in some way superior to meat eaters.
.
"Vegans also have compassion" you say - really!!, and we don't I suppose if we don't see things your way.

We also have compassion - ALSO.
Not exclusive to us.
I do not expect others to agree or disagree with my views. But when the facts are laid out then either disprove those facts or at least stop peddling misinformation. That is what WNs web site is all about.

If being vegan makes me fitter am I not allowed to say so?
If being vegan makes me healthier do I not have the right to say so?
So why may I not say say being vegan makes me a better person?
The sad meat eaters who deny animal cruelty and post on these sights that we should not say it as it is are the ones that should have their every word challenged. No one has denied my above examples of bad animal husbandry which is the subject of the debate. Prefering to deny me the right to answer honestly the questions they ask.
