SIR – In response to Mr Whitehouse’s biased view of unions (Letters, August 24) perhaps when he makes these derogatory statements against the unions – ordinary hard working people – he might like to consider what the working conditions of workers were like before there were trades unions.

The bosses did not want the minimum wage, a 40-hour week or the right to holiday pay. These rights had to be fought for over many years and at great cost to any worker who tried to start a union. If the Labour Party had not been started, do you think that the bosses would have willingly given up some of their profits to make working conditions better? I think not.
